Privacy Policy
The short version
- We use your answers only to create and email your emergency plan, plus two short follow-up emails you can unsubscribe from.
- We never sell your information or use it for advertising.
- Some of the service providers that help build and deliver your plan are in the United States.
- Our server doesn't keep your questionnaire answers. We delete our copy of your delivery email within 30 days.
- You can ask us what we hold about you, or ask us to delete it, at any time.
1. Who we are
SafeHome creates personalised household emergency preparedness plans for addresses in Canada. We currently serve every province and territory except Québec.
Our privacy contact is responsible for how we handle personal information. You can reach them at hello@safehomeplan.ca.
2. What we collect
When you fill in the questionnaire, we collect:
- Contact details: your name, email address and (optionally) phone number.
- Your home: street address, city, province, postal code, home type, number of floors, approximate year built, and whether you own or rent.
- Your household: the number of adults and children, adults' names and (optionally) phone numbers, children's first names and age groups, whether anyone is 65+ or has mobility needs, and your pets.
- Health information (optional): a brief description of any medical needs that could affect an emergency, and whether anyone uses refrigerated medication or powered medical equipment.
- Emergency contacts (optional): an out-of-area contact's name and phone number, and your family meeting points.
- Insurance (optional): your home insurer's name and claims phone number. We don't ask for your policy number.
When you pay, our payment processor, Stripe, collects your payment details. We never see or store your full card number.
Please only share what you're comfortable having printed in your plan. You don't need to give us specific diagnoses.
3. How we use it
- To write your personalised plan, wallet card and phone wallpaper.
- To email your plan to you.
- To send two follow-up emails (a check-in about 3 days later and preparedness tips about 14 days later). Every one has an unsubscribe link.
- To confirm your payment and answer your questions.
We don't use your information for anything else. We don't sell it, rent it, or use it for advertising or profiling.
4. Your consent
Before we create your plan, we ask for your express consent to use your information, including any health information, as described here. That includes processing by our service providers outside Canada. You can withdraw consent at any time by contacting us, although we can't create a plan without the information it's based on.
The questionnaire must be completed by an adult (18+).
5. Information about other people
Your plan can include people other than you, such as members of your household or an out-of-area contact. Please only include someone's details if they know and agree. If you're a landlord or agent ordering for a property, you're responsible for having your tenants' or clients' permission. We use these details only to print your plan and wallet card.
6. Who helps us, and where your information goes
We use a small number of service providers to create and deliver your plan. Each receives only what it needs and is bound by its own privacy and security commitments. Several are located outside Canada, mainly in the United States. While your information is there, it's subject to the laws of that country and may be accessed by its courts, law enforcement or national security authorities.
| Provider | What it does | What it receives | Location |
|---|---|---|---|
| Anthropic (Claude) | AI service that writes your plan's hazard and household guidance | City, province and street address (to find the nearest hospitals), home details, household counts and age groups, pets, and any health notes. Not names or email addresses. | United States |
| Google (Maps) | Suggests your address as you type | What you type into the address search box | United States |
| Render | Runs the server that builds your plan | Your questionnaire answers, briefly while your plan is built | United States |
| Google (Gmail) | Sends your plan by email | Your name, email address and your plan files | United States |
| MailerLite | Sends the follow-up emails | Your name and email address only | Outside Canada |
| Stripe | Processes your payment | Your payment and billing details | Canada and the United States |
| Netlify | Hosts this website | Standard website traffic data, such as your IP address | United States |
Questions about how our providers outside Canada handle your information can go to our privacy contact above.
7. How long we keep it
- Questionnaire answers: our server doesn't save them. Your plan is built in temporary storage that is erased as soon as your email is sent.
- Delivery email: our copy, including your plan, is deleted within 30 days.
- AI provider: our AI provider may keep the request briefly under its own retention policy (for example, for abuse monitoring). It is not used to train its models.
- Follow-up email list: your name and email stay on the list until you unsubscribe, and no longer than 2 years after your purchase.
- Order records: your name, email, what you bought and the amount paid, but not your questionnaire answers, are kept for six years, as Canadian tax law requires.
- Short-lived server logs: these may include a partly hidden email address and are kept only for troubleshooting.
8. How we protect it
Information travels over encrypted connections. We only generate a plan after verifying your payment, and we keep only what we need for as long as we need it. Access to our systems is limited to the people who run SafeHome. Your plan is emailed to you as an attachment, so please store it somewhere safe and share it only with people you trust.
9. Your rights
You can ask to see the personal information we hold about you, correct it, or delete it, and you can withdraw your consent. Email hello@safehomeplan.ca and we'll respond within 30 days. You can unsubscribe from follow-up emails at any time using the link in any email.
If you're not satisfied with our response, you can complain to the privacy commissioner for your province:
- Alberta: Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Alberta
- British Columbia: Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner for BC
- All other provinces and territories: Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada
10. If something goes wrong
If a privacy breach creates a real risk of significant harm to you, we'll tell you as soon as possible and report it to the appropriate privacy commissioner, as the law requires.
11. Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we'll post the new version here with a new effective date. We won't use information already collected in a new way without asking you first.
